Competing Interests Series

Does it seem to you that within the legal profession there’s an awful lot of talk about diversity and inclusion but not nearly enough action? At the Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession (“IILP”), that’s often how we feel. Hence our motto: “Real change. Now.”

But to move beyond talk and effect that change – meaningful change, as opposed to random action for the sake of action – requires thoughtful analysis and impactful strategy. We can’t affect that change without some sense of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. We know what the problem is. We know the desired outcome. What’s been missing is just what we need to do to reach the desired outcome. Until now.

IILP is proud to announce the publication of “Competing Interests,” a three-part series of papers that explains:

  1. Why corporate clients and their outside counsel need to be concerned about the declining numbers of diverse, especially African American, partners;
  2. How the legal profession has overlooked the way efforts to address legitimate values such as the need for greater economy and efficiency have undermined its own diversity and inclusion efforts; and,
  3. Specific recommendations for lawyers, law firms and corporate law departments that explain what to do to address these concerns, how to do it, and why.
